At present, a large number of celebrities have become popular due to their tremendous wealth instead of their achievements, which may negatively influence the behavior of the young generations. In my opinion, although this propensity encourages young individuals to work more diligently, it largely has a detrimental impact on them and should not be promoted.
On the one hand, the trend of individuals becoming famous through boasting wealth can provide incentives for young individuals to strive and achieve financial freedom. When wealthy individuals appear frequently online, young people are likely to feel motivated to broaden their knowledge and improve their productivity to obtain what these celebrities possess. As a result, this increases their chances of success as they are likely to be more capable of accumulating wealth, thereby raising their own living standards. For example, due to the ubiquity of famous content creators flaunting their luxurious lifestyles on Tiktok, many young individuals may feel inspired to emulate this way of life. Due to the virality of these social media platforms, this is likely to have a widespread impact on a population, engendering positive economic outcomes for a given nation.
However, the increased productivity is most likely achieved at the expense of young people’s mental health. Celebrities’ ostentatious displays of wealth can engender a sense of envy and deepen viewers’ insecurities as they compare themselves with these public figures, thereby increasing their susceptibility to burnout. The fact that young people now see the seemingly perfect life of celebrities on a daily basis places constant pressure on them to perform and further exacerbates their mental health problems. The mental health crises can be evidently observed in Western countries, where the major contributing factor to rising rates of clinical depression is the unrealistic expectations that young people have developed because of social media. As individuals place greater emphasis on satisfying materialistic needs, traditional values are likely to be neglected, leading to weaker social cohesion and societal decline.
In conclusion, although young individuals may feel motivated to work harder after viewing celebrities’ ostentatious behavior, they are likely to suffer from mental health issues due to constant comparisons, which renders this trend negative overall.
