At present, there has been a gradual decline in cultural diversity as individuals globally tend to be interested in the same popular culture products. In my opinion, although this nascent propensity promotes a valuable sense of connectedness and improves relations between individuals and countries, it results in negative financial repercussions and a loss of cultural identity, which is decidedly negative on the whole.
A key social benefit of cultural similarity is that it serves as a unifying force. Thanks to globalization and similar values, it has become easier than ever for individuals to establish meaningful connections with others from vastly different backgrounds. For instance, the rising popularity of Western movies and TV shows has created common ground for individuals globally to express personal opinions on shared topics of conversation and therefore potentially creates lasting friendships that transcend national borders. A mutual understanding between each country also improves international relations, contributing to potentially improved regional stability. Nations that lack this sense of understanding may risk developing a hostile relationship, as in the case of the US and China.
However, the disadvantages concomitant with cultural homogenization relate to potential decline in the tourism industry. An excessive emphasis on popular media and trends can lead to the erosion of local cultures and consequently make a country less attractive to tourists in the long-term in the long-term. The financial consequences of this trend are evident in Vietnam, where reduced income from tourist activities in certain regions can be attributed to the gradual attrition of culturally significant traditions such as water puppetry theater and folk song performances. The loss of these traditional forms of expressive arts also undermine cultural identity more generally. As a result, individuals living in metropolitan areas, where mainstream media dominates most spheres of life, are more likely to feel anxious and disconnected from their communities.
In conclusion, despite engendering a sense of global togetherness and enhancing international political stability, the dominance of popular media trends has a negative influence on a nation’s economy and cultural distinctiveness, therefore overshadowing any perceived benefits. Countries globally should focus mainly on preserving their cultures while selectively integrating modern media trends.
