Many feel that students who do not have an innate ability for language learning should not be obligated to study foreign languages. In my opinion, although these students might not be able to learn a new language effectively, they should still acquire a basic command of a foreign language given the instrumental role of language in today’s world.
Detractors of mandatory language subjects typically point to their ineffectiveness. Forcing students to study a language that they are neither passionate about nor talented at might be a waste of time, which should have been spent on developing their real strengths. For instance, teachers could allocate less time to teaching English and more time to subjects in which these students demonstrate greater levels of aptitude, such as mathematics, chemistry, and physics. Such knowledge can realistically promote these students’ career prospects in professions that rely more on technical expertise than linguistic ability. As a result, there is likely to be a more balanced division of labor in society, thereby laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth.
Nevertheless, teachers should still require students to study foreign languages due to their paramount importance in the modern day. In today’s globalized world, knowing a foreign language at a basic to intermediate level is a non-negotiable factor in seeking potentially life-changing employment and educational opportunities. Students who possess such skills can gain access to a wider range of academic resources, communicate with people from different countries, and participate more effectively in the global economy. If these individuals continue developing their linguistic skills, they may become eligible for scholarships and overseas study programs,
enabling them to acquire specialized knowledge and achieve a competitive edge in the labor market. As a result, they are likely to generate significantly higher income and raise their living standards.
In conclusion, although less linguistically inclined students might struggle to learn foreign languages, this skill must be taught at school to maximize their chances of success in the future. Schools should place greater emphasis on teaching English not only in cities but also in rural areas to promote a given nation’s growth.
