Healthy eating habits

Some people believe that it is the responsibility of individuals to take care of their own health and diet. Others however believe that governments should make sure that their citizens have a healthy diet.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Some feel that individuals should be responsible for developing healthy eating habits, while others typically argue that this responsibility belongs to the government. In my opinion, although the government can enact regulation to promote healthy eating to a certain extent, there should be a greater emphasis on individual role in following a healthy regimen.

On the one hand, health authorities play an instrumental role in imposing laws to discourage the consumption of unhealthy food. A higher tax rate can be levied on fast food, raising the price and therefore making it less accessible to the general population. This policy has been successfully implemented in Mexico, where ultra-processed food like sausages and pizzas is relatively expensive compared to healthier alternatives, aiding the fight against soaring obesity levels. The government can also run campaigns to highlight the importance of developing a healthy diet. For example, the UK government has launched various advertisements on television and social media platforms to warn consumers about the elevated risks of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes resulting from excessive consumption of fatty and sugary food.

However, the cultivation of a healthy eating habit is chiefly an individual responsibility as one’s personal choices directly determine their dietary intake. Despite the guidelines and support provided by public health agencies, each individual is fully responsible for what they ultimately choose to eat as they have the best understanding of their own dietary requirements, lifestyle constraints, and personal preferences. For instance, diabetic patients need to follow a diet tailored to their health condition, which requires heightened awareness of carbohydrate intake, portion sizes, and blood sugar levels. These decisions have to be made on an individual level and cannot be managed effectively by any public campaigns.

In conclusion, although the government can provide guidance to help individuals make more informed decisions regarding their diets, the responsibility of maintaining a healthy diet largely resides in each individual. Individuals should actively seek methods to improve the quality of their daily meals to ensure that all their nutritional needs are adequately met.
