The graph illustrates the proportion of employees from various European nations who missed one or more days of work because of sickness over a period of a decade starting from 1991. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the statistics for workers taking sick leave in the Netherlands and Sweden witnessed upward trends, while France’s data declined over time and Germany and the UK’s percentages experienced minor fluctuations throughout the period. In addition, the Netherlands recorded the highest percentage of workers with illness absence for most of the period in question, whereas the opposite was true for Germany.
In 1991, the figure for workers on sick leave in France was greatest at 5%, followed closely by the Netherlands’ data at around 4.8%. France’s percentage then peaked at 5.2% in 1992 before falling significantly to 3.2% in 1996 and tapered off to end at only 3%. Similarly, the Netherlands’ proportion surpassed France’s and reached a zenith of 5.5% in 1996 prior to a dramatic drop to exactly 4% and a full recovery to finish at 5.5%.
In the first year surveyed, Germany represented the lowest figure for workers missing work due to health issues at 1.5%, substantially lower than the UK and Sweden at 2.6% and 3%, respectively. All three countries’ data thereafter underwent slight variations, with Sweden’s surging to culminate at 4.8%. Germany and the UK’s statistics continued fluctuating until the end of the period, with both returning to their 1991 levels in the final year.
