In recent years, there has been a rise in the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports. What are the consequences of doping for athletes? What measures should be taken to combat this issue?

At present, an increasing number of athletes use performance-enhancing drugs to gain a competitive edge. The abuse of these drugs can result in serious long-term health consequences. However, this persistent problem can be addressed through the implementation of strict punishments for doping athletes and launching campaigns to raise awareness about the possible health risks.

Those involved in doping are more susceptible to various health problems. Despite the improvement in physical performance in the short term, doping leads to unavoidable long-term side effects that lower one’s life quality and even longevity. The health risks of doping are most evident among bodybuilders, who excessively use steroids, and as a result suffer from frequent mood swings, elevated blood pressure, and liver damage. These substances are also banned in most competitions and sports, which can damage an athlete’s reputation and ruin their career if being exposed. A notorious athlete whose fame is destroyed  is Lance Amstrong, as all of his Tour De France titles are revoked and his actions face severe public backlash.

Nevertheless, doping incidence can be reduced through stringent punishments. Governing bodies can conduct random drug tests on a regular basis and impose severe penalties for doping athletes such as lengthy suspensions and lifetime bans to act as an effective form of deterrence. Another viable measure is for sports governing entities to launch campaigns that spread awareness about doping’s adverse effects on health. For instance, organizations and athletes should make cooperative efforts to highlight the potential for health deterioration following the use of performance-enhancing drugs to discourage such acts.

In conclusion, doping can be damaging to one’s overall health and therefore there should be large-scale awareness campaigns, rigorous drug testing and punishments to deter its use.
