The table below shows the change in number of people engaged in various physical activities between the years 2001-2009 in Australia (in million people).
The table illustrates the percentage of individuals taking part in different sporting activities from 2001 to 2009 in Australia. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that all physical activities in question gained popularity over time, except for swimming and, more notably, cycling. Running recorded by far the greatest increase in the percentage of participants.
There was a consistent rise in interest in running, aerobics, and tennis throughout the period. In 2001, tennis recorded the lowest participation at 1 million, compared with 1.4 million runners and 1.5 million aerobics participants. Between 2001 and 2009, participation in aerobics and tennis increased modestly, with both figures climbing by exactly 0.2 million to reach 1.7 million and 1.2 million, respectively. Although aerobics’ figure was higher, its percentage growth was only 11%, lower than that of tennis at 15%. In contrast, running registered the largest percentage increase, rising by 56% to end at 2.2 million runners in 2009.
On the other hand, cycling and swimming witnessed declines in prevalence over the years. Cycling was initially reported to be the most popular activity, with 4.5 million cyclists, greater than the data for swimmers at 3.7 million. After four years, the number of swimmers increased marginally to 3.8 million and temporarily secured the top position, before dropping to 3.3 million in 2009, representing a 10% decrease. On the contrary, despite constituting the steepest proportion decrease over the period, cycling remained the most popular activity in 2009, with 3.6 million cyclists.
