Reducing crime

Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer sentences. Others, however, believe that there are better alternative ways of reducing crime.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion  

Many feel that the most effective method to lower crime rates is imposing lengthier sentences, while others would argue that there are other more viable measures. In my opinion, the implementation of longer prison sentences is largely ineffective as it fails to take into account the subtleties of human behavior and the root causes of criminality.  

The adoption of stricter incarceration sentences is likely to be insufficient due to the immutability of human nature. Humans are often influenced by cognitive biases and the lack of awareness of their own actions, predisposing individuals to seek instant gratification and engage in criminal behavior without factoring in negative future repercussions. These psychological pitfalls can be evidently demonstrated in the criminal justice system, where an accused may show a deep sense of remorse for their crimes only when they are proven guilty. This approach to addressing crime also disregards the decisive underlying causes of criminality. Recent research conducted into the field of criminal psychology has indicated that crime rates are likely to remain unchanged as long as the motives behind criminal acts such as extreme poverty and unemployment persist. 

Instead, the government can effectively curtail crime by ensuring equal access to educational opportunities for the general populace. By introducing programs such as bursaries and scholarships to make equitable education accessible to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, they are significantly less likely to resort to crime as a means to sustain a livelihood. The effectiveness of such a holistic policy has been exemplified in Denmark, a developed nation that has consistently reported low crime rates as a result of the provision of free compulsory education for all children aged from 6 to 16 regardless of socio-economic background. An educational system should also place emphasis on not only academic subjects, but also vocational training to increase employability for lower-middle class residents. For example, Demand boasts a variety of vocational options ranging from hairdressing and gardening to construction and carpentry in high schools, fostering job security for those who are less academically-inclined.

In conclusion, I would contend that prolonging prison sentences is not an effective enough deterrent against crime, and consequently the government should make efforts to increase accessibility to education.
