Shopping malls

Explore the modern architecture of a luxury shopping mall in Hong Kong.

Many people consider shopping malls as great places to spend their leisure time and meet others. People in the past, however, visited shopping malls only when necessary.

To what extent do you think this is a negative trend?

At present, some individuals enjoy unwinding and socializing in shopping centers. However, individuals used to only visit these malls to purchase essential items. In my opinion, this propensity is unequivocally negative as it promotes consumerism and leads to serious health consequences.

Firstly, the increasing trend of visiting shopping malls for recreational purposes encourages wasteful consumer spending. Modern malls are strategically designed to extend the duration of visits by offering a wide range of entertainment facilities such as cinema, restaurants, and arcades. A pertinent example of this is demonstrated in Lotte malls, where a children’s playground, an aquarium, and even an ice rink are available to cater to families. The consumerism culture is further reinforced as stores in these malls generally employ flash sales and promotional signage to entice customers to browse, increasing their chances of making unnecessary purchases. For instance, clothing brands often advertise limited-time discounts, prompting customers to buy items they might not genuinely need.

Another drawback of this trend is that it places individuals at certain health risks. Most activities in shopping malls now involve slow walking or prolonged sitting, thereby promoting a more sedentary lifestyle. It’s common for individuals to sit for extended periods in a movie theater instead of engaging in outdoor physical activities. This shift towards mall-oriented leisure also results in the erosion of cultural identity. For example, local street markets that sell traditional garments are steadily losing customers to international clothing brands operating in large malls

In conclusion, this trend is decidedly negative overall because it leads to wasteful spending and exposes individuals to health problems.
