Many feel that companies should prioritize creative candidates in the recruitment process, while others argue that they should focus on those possessing teamwork skills and being able to follow guidelines. In my opinion, although the ability to work in teams is crucial in the majority of industries, innovative thinkers play an indispensable role in societal progress and therefore are a more valuable asset to an organization.
On the one hand, the ability to cooperate and follow instructions is applicable in the majority of industries. In the healthcare sector, doctors and nurses have to adhere to strict protocols to ensure that medical procedures are conducted safely and effectively. If these medical professionals try to deviate from these predetermined set of rules and standards, patients’ lives are likely to be threatened. The same attitude to hiring should be adopted in the aviation industry, where people’s lives are at risk. For example, pilots and co-pilots should be able to coordinate efficiently and comply with flight regulations to respond to potentially dangerous situations such as turbulence, engine failures, and air traffic congestion.
However, only the recruitment of independent thinkers can propel a company forward. Employees with high levels of creativity and autonomy can produce original ideas, creating new demand in the market and generating tremendous profits for a given organization. Apple is a pertinent example of a company consistently orienting itself towards hiring innovative individuals, which in turn allows the company to achieve technological breakthroughs and revolutionizes the world. Similar principles of recruitment are evidently seen in other global conglomerates such as Microsoft, whose operating system, despite being invented nearly half a century ago, is still widely used. These real-life examples highlight the fact that innovative thinkers contribute significantly to a company’s progress in particular and that of mankind more generally
In conclusion, despite the practicality of hiring those with teamwork skills and the ability to follow instructions, I believe that companies should place greater emphasis on recruiting creative thinkers to drive progress.
