The spending by 18-20 year olds

The chart illustrates how much money is spent on various categories by those aged from 18 to 20 in 2010 and 2014.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that expenditure on food, smartphones, and toiletries grew from 2010 to 2014, while that of clothes remained unchanged and books declined. Food accounted for the most significant spending in both years in question, whereas the opposite was the case for books.

In 2010, those in the 18 to 20 age bracket spent the most amount of money on food at around 3600 million dollars, nearly double smartphones and toiletries’ figures, representing precisely 2000 million and approximately 1800 million dollars, respectively. Over the following four years, the figures for these categories all rose, with spending on food and smartphones rising to relatively similar degrees, reaching 4400 million and 2700 million dollars, in turn. In contrast, toiletries’ statistics increased to a lesser extent, hitting exactly 2000 million dollars in 2014.

Looking next at the expenses of books in 2010, this category’s number was least notable at 1000 million dollars, considerably lower than clothes’ at 2500 million dollars. After four years, spending on clothes stayed the same, while that of books halved to only 500 million dollars.
