The charts below show the average time UK workers spent traveling to work and their methods of transportation in 2009.
The pie chart illustrates how much time workers in the UK spent on commuting and their means of transport in 2009. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the majority of workers spent from 1 to 15 minutes on average to get to work, while the percentage of those taking over 60 minutes was least significant. In terms of modes of transport, cars were by far the most popular, both in London, and more prominently, the rest of the UK.
Looking first of all at the pie chart, most workers took only 1 to 15 minutes to reach their workplace, accounting for 42%, followed closely by those taking 16 to 30 minutes, at 33%. The proportions of workers spending from 31 to 45 minutes, 45 to 60 minutes, and over an hour to commute were comparable, constituting 12%, 8%, and 5%, respectively.
Concerning the bar chart, the rest of the UK recorded an overwhelming percentage of workers driving cars to work, at around 71%, contrasting sharply with the remaining modes of transport, all of which represented just under 10%, except for walking at 11%. Similarly, London also reported the greatest car usage among workers, despite being considerably lower at roughly 35%. The figures for individuals relying on the underground and trains to commute were similar, accounting for 20% and 18%, for each. The same was true for those taking the bus and walking, with the former representing 12% and the latter 9%.
