Age categories in US

The chart shows the percentage of individuals living alone across five distinct age categories in the United States from 1850 to 2000.

The chart illustrates the proportion of individuals living by themselves belonging to various age brackets in the US over a period of 150 years starting from 1850. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that individuals were more likely to live alone as they grew older, with the gap between age groups widening over time. The figures for those living alone of all age demographics also rose during this time period, with the oldest age category increasing most significantly.

In 1850, only three age cohorts were examined, with individuals aged 37-46 and 47-54 accounting for the same percentage of 2.2%, and those aged from 55-64 representing a slightly higher data point of 2.9%. After fifty years, the data for those aged 37-46 remained unchanged at 2.2%, while the 47-54 and 55-65 age groups’ statistics both rose marginally to 3% and 3.5%, respectively. Only in 1900 did the 27-36 age range appear in the chart, standing at around 2.1%.

Turning to the year 1950, the percentages of individuals living alone in all age groups continued their upward trajectories. Leading this growth was the oldest age category, which soared to roughly 9%. This increase contrasted sharply with  the figures for those aged 27-54, which grew by only about 1%. This was  the first year in which data on the 17-26 age cohort was collected, registering nearly 2%.

In the final year surveyed, living alone became increasingly common for all age groups, with the most notable rises recorded for those aged 47-64 and 55-64, surging to 13% and 17%, for each. The figure for those aged 37-46 was surpassed by the 27-36 age category, accounting for 8% and and 7%, in turn. The proportion of the youngest age bracket remained the lowest, despite a more than twofold increase to reach 5%.
