Historical objects should be brought back to their country of origin .
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many feel that historical items should be repatriated to their nation of origin. In my opinion, although the repatriation of historical artifacts could improve relations between countries, these objects should not be returned due to a high risk of damage.
Proponents of returning historically significant items typically point to potential reduced tensions between nations. Resentment towards past colonial powers would abate if illegally confiscated artifacts, now mostly residing in Europe, were returned to their rightful owners. In fact, the continued act of displaying stolen stone inscriptions and sculptures from other nations in British museums fuels anger among former commonwealth nations and therefore should be stopped. For this legitimate reason, the return of historical items could alleviate some of the pain of colonialism when countries responsible for colonial rule initiate attempts to rectify past mistakes.
However, the repatriation of historical items should not be considered in the majority of contexts due to the risks to these objects themselves. This would be especially true if historically important artifacts were sent to regions involved in on-going conflicts, where they could be in danger of being permanently destroyed. Such a risk related to regional instability is completely eliminated today as many African artifacts are now safely protected in Western museums. Certain highly fragile ancient artifacts would also run the same risk if they were to be repatriated. Even the most careful packaging exposes these items to potential damage from excessive heat or humidity.
In conclusion, despite the possibility of easing international resentment towards past colonial injustices, I would argue that repatriating historical objects should not be considered as a first alternative as they might be irreversibly damaged or permanently lost. Museums in developed countries should bear the responsibility and enact effective measures to safeguard these invaluable historical items.
