Imported food

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Imported food has become increasingly prevalent in supermarkets in various countries around the world. In my opinion, despite the potential economic drawbacks for local businesses, this modern propensity engenders higher quality products for consumers, which is unequivocally positive on the whole.

Detractors of imported produce typically point to its negative impact on the profitability of local food companies. The invasive presence of imported products translates to heightened competition, which can result in lower sales and earnings figures for local producers. These negative financial ramifications have been evident in emerging markets such as Vietnam, where local fruit distributors have lost significant market share in recent years due to the widespread availability of apples, oranges, and grapes imported from Western nations. The resultant stagnation of domestic food businesses also threatens the livelihoods of farmers. Farmers who logistically depend on supermarkets to purchase their stocks may have to sell their produce for little profits or even at a loss in extreme contexts.

However, higher levels of competition can significantly improve the general quality and price of products. The rapid emergence of globally-sourced produce serves as motivation for local companies to innovate and create more appealing options for consumers. For example, the appearance of organic fruits and vegetables sourced from Japan has led certain Vietnamese food companies to eliminate the use of pesticides for their crops. For less expensive food items, fierce competition means lower prices. This tangible benefit is best illustrated in big cities, where residents can gain access to a wide variety of affordable, but high-quality food items.

In conclusion, although accessibility to a vast range of imported produce can threaten the financial interests of local food producers, this nascent trend significantly contributes to superior food quality with cheaper prices, which is decidedly positive overall. Governments should facilitate this change in the consumer economy by easing the process by which foreign goods enter the domestic market to enhance quality of life.
