Study materials

Many people feel that students should learn from online materials, while others feel that it is better to use printed materials.Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some argue that students should rely on digital materials for studying, whereas others would contend that printed materials are better for this purpose. In my opinion, although learning through traditional materials can foster high levels of concentration, materials on the internet allow students to gain access to a wide range of useful learning resources and promote environmental sustainability.

Proponents of printed materials typically point to their ability to minimize distractions during study sessions. Online learning resources often display flashing banner adverts and pop-ups, which can greatly distract students from the main content. For example, many English learners reported not being able to focus on the definitions of new vocabulary on Cambridge Dictionary website due to the advertisements appearing on both sides of the page. Furthermore, printed materials can also aid reading comprehension. Recent research conducted has indicated that students who read on paper could recall the plot more accurately than those using a Kindle, likely because the fixed physical layout of printed books help create a mental map of the text.

However, I believe that printed materials are preferable because they facilitate access to a vast array of academic materials. The availability of news articles, research papers, and educational videos enable students to engage in more comprehensive research and cross-reference between multiple sources and therefore gain a deeper insight into the subject matter. In addition, digital materials are more environmentally-friendly. For instance, a school that switches to e-books for all subjects can save thousands of sheets of paper each year, thereby reducing deforestation and the carbon emissions associated with paper production and transportation.

In conclusion, traditional materials can enhance students’ ability to concentrate, they should seek to learn through online materials to protect the environment and take advantage of the sheer amount of educational content available online.
