Table #6: Retirement age

The graph below shows the average retirement age of males and females in six countries in 2003.

The graph illustrates the age at which workers of both genders retired in various nations in 2003.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that males in all countries retired a year later than their female counterparts. The average retirement age in France was by far the lowest for both sexes, while individuals in Korea retired the latest, albeit by a smaller margin.

Looking first of all at Korea, where the retirement age for both genders was highest, males retired on average at the age of 68 and 8 months and females at the age of 67 and 2 months. Similarly, Japan and Italy’s male workers generally retired one year earlier, with both countries recording the exact same figure of 67 years and 4 months. Female data for both countries were also equal at 66 years and 9 months.

France reported the earliest retirement age for both genders, with men becoming retirees at the age of 57 and women retiring a year earlier than that figure. The average retirement age recorded for the US’s male citizens was higher than Australia’s, with the former being 65 years old and the latter 64. A similar trend can be seen for the opposite gender as most females in the US were retired by age 64, one year later compared to Australian women
